BMW F650 GS (twin) acessories - official motorrad accessories

imageThe old BMW F650 GS single cylinder has recently been replaced with a new twin cylinder version. Contrary to the fact it’s still called the “650”, it actually comes with a 800cc engine almost the same as the one found on the F800GS, but detuned in horsepower. If you’re lucky enough to be the owner of a BMW F650 GS twin, you’re probably in the market for BMW GS accessories to spice up your bike a bit. Below is a list of the official BMW Motorrad accessories made for the BMW F650 GS twin.

BMW F650GS accessory: Switchable ABS

imageA great BMW GS accessory you should consider for safety reasons is the official motorrad ABS system. This is a “switchable” system, meaning it can be turned off. The switch is conventiently located near the center of the handle bars and a warning light on the dashboard indicates if it’s turned on or off. The F650GS ABS should always be switched on when riding on dry or wet solid grounds, unless you know what you’re doing. When riding off road however, it helps to turn off the ABS. When you’re going down a steep hill some people break on the rear wheel, thus letting the bike slide down. With F650GS ABS turned on this wouldn’t be possible - the whole purpose of ABS is to stop the wheels sliding.

BMW F650GS accessory: Akrapovic Silencer / exhaust

imageAkrapovic seems to be the official exhaust system manufacturer selected by BMW motorrad, since BMW they recommend these silencers for all their bikes. Akrapovic is a company located in Slovenia that makes motorcycle and car exhausts. The BMW F650GS silencer they make is not at the cheap end of the spectrum (one store supplies it at around 900USD), but the sound is great. The BMW F650GS silencer is made from titanium and steel and weighs 5.5lbs. It does not come with a catalytic converter, but it does fit the standard manifold.

BMW F650GS accessory: Protective Bashplate

imageA bashplate is a solid plate located below the engine that runs parallel to the ground. Its purpose is to protect the engine from rocks and other debris lying on the road that could bounce up and smash in to the engine, damaging it. A bashplate for the BMW F650 GS twin is an essential accessory to get if you plan on doing any off road riding at all - and this includes slow explorations of tracks near your home. It’s easy to damage the bike and a bashplate’s is one of the accessories you can get to protect your bike. However. Many people report this Motorrad bashplate is of pretty low quality and often breaks itself on the first serious set of rocks you hit. The BMW motorrad catalog itself mentions “for moderate off-road use”, so remember this when you’re considering a bashplate as a BMW GS accessory.

BMW F650GS accessory: Centre Stand

imageA BMW F650GS center stand is an additional stand to the one that comes out on the left, standard on the bike. The left stand is probably fine for inner city use, but if you’re planning on parking your BMW F650GS on soft ground (offroad) the weight of the bike will make the stock stand sink in to the ground and your bike might fall ... Since A BMW F650GS center stand make the rear wheel come off the ground, it’s also a useful motorcycle accessory to get for doing basic work on your bike like oiling the chain or tightening it.

BMW F650GS accessory: On Board Computer

imageBMW Motorrad makes an on-board computer for the BMW F650GS. Its mounted on the bike, to the right of the speedometer and let displays all of the following: air temperature, fuel level, range, water temperature in the radiator, the gear you’re riding in and your average fuel consumption. Optionally, you can also get an add-on that monitors the tire pressure. All this data gives you useful information about your bike and the trip you’re taking. The BMW F650GS on board computer also features a less useful stopwatch.
